Our culture has made us believe that getting our period is the "worst" time of the month, it is even referred to as a "curse" or thrown at us with no little gaslight whenever we are trying to prove a point or say something with a little extra passion.
"Sorry, I'm on my period" we excuse ourselves when we feel a bit extra vulnerable or sensitive. As if either of these were "bad" things. Here's the gaslight. So we've "tamed" ourselves and try to push through this period as if nothing was different. However, continuing to live believing these tropes only allow for this disconnect from our bodies, biological needs and intuition to persist. Below are 3 tips to getting through our menstrual phase with more grounding and empowerment and begin to embody the characteristics of this special time.

1. Transform how you view this phase - Reclaim its magic
The first tip is precisely to turn all these old views around and truly see the magic and power that there is not only in this menstrual phase but in the menstrual cycle as a whole!
Here rests the source of our intuition and we need to tap into it in order to hear our bodies and know what they need from us. The menstrual phase is ground zero, the ending and beginning. From here on, everything is possible. This is a time to relax and let go, let go of obligations (those that you can, obviously, and those that you can't let go of, just lower your expectations, because this is "you" time), let go of things that are weighing you down, let go literally of your blood so it takes away what your body no longer needs and cleanses itself. Relax, it's time for dreaming, for manifesting. You don't yet need to do anything about it, just dream.
When you regain the empowerment and love for your period, through knowing everything it does for you and all the special aspects of this moment, you'll be able to reclaim its power.
Transform the way you view your own period from "curse" to "magical",
from "dragging - your -feet - tired" to "allowing yourself to rest",
and from "I'm extra sensitive" to "my soul is at its most intuitive and open right now".
2. Know what is going on, biologically, inside your body
In order to reconnect yourself with your intuition and know your body's needs, it is helpful to know what is actually happening in there. The menstrual phase is both an ending and a beginning. Throughout your previous month, your body worked really hard to prepare you for pregnancy, every single month it does this (while we obviously know this, we tend to forget it).
During your follicular phase it worked hard to grow a perfect little egg, then, during ovulation, your body released that egg as it traveled through your fallopian tube and into your uterus, awaiting to be fertilized and lastly, during your luteal phase your body didn't know yet if the egg was fertilized or not, so it actually began to prepare itself for pregnancy just in case! That is a whole lot of work for your body!! Through each of these phases, hormones come in and out playing different roles that turn on and off different biological reactions. But then, suddenly, the body finds out that your egg was not fertilized, and so, it releases everything, lets it all go, egg, uterine lining, blood and excess hormones. Only to begin this process all over again in your next cycle.
When you know all of this, it causes you to feel slightly different about your period, it makes you want to hold your body, nourish it, tell it "everything is going to be ok, I'm here for you, thank you for all you do for me".
3. Treat yourself with gentleness
Following the previous tip, knowing what is going on biologically in your body, makes you realize all the hard work that your body has done, is doing, constantly for you. For this reason, you can be grateful and show your body some love by allowing it (yourself) to rest, when it's asking for it. Rest means physically AND mentally, whichever one or both depending on how you are feeling.
While it is true that society has made us dislike our period for various reasons and has labeled everything related to the period as weak, mean, annoying or overly sensitive with a negative connotation, it has also labeled "rest" as bad. We live in a culture where productivity is the only esteemed and acceptable state of being, the instant we rest we call it "unproductive" or even "procrastination". There are big differences between true rest and procrastination, until we don't differentiate them, we will feel guilty every single time we rest. And it's just no fun to live your life with so much constant guilt. We lead ourselves to burnout.
Transform this rest. Don't worry, your follicular phase is around the corner and your energy and motivation will come back! Recover before that happens so that you are at 100% by then!
Rest.
Eat.
Listen to your needs.
